SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATIONAL FACILITATION

Parents of children with special needs experience both rewards and challenges as they navigate their children's educational program. A partnership between home and school is essential for children with special needs to reach their maximum potential. Parent's often find services difficult to access, terminology confusing, school personnel defensive, and their children's progress lacking.

Special Needs Educational Facilitation is a support service designed to help parents navigate the educational system in order to obtain necessary services that promote children's maximum progress. Special needs advocacy often takes an adversarial approach which may create a division in the family school partnership making it difficult for parents and teachers to work together. Parenting Partnerships' Certified Family Life Educators utilize a positive approach to help parents navigate the educational process and create win-win solutions for families and schools.

Facilitation may include the following activities:

  • Parent consultation in person, phone, or email
  • Review school records, assessment reports, and medical information
  • Assist parents with an organizational system for children's records
  • Provide educational information for parents regarding disabilities and educational labels
  • Conference with school personnel and support service providers
  • Provide information regarding Section 504 and IDEA
  • Discuss a continuum of possible services
  • Review existing IEP, Progress Reports, and Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Assist parents with development of a Plan of Action
  • Attend school conferences at parent request
  • Attend ARD/IEP meetings at parent request
  • Attend 504 meetings at parent request
  • Prepare parents for mediation or due process hearings
  • Attend mediation or due process hearings at parent request
